Trusting third party apps
Looking for a secure private messaging client is easy. There are a lot to be found in the app store of your choice. Though the harder question is how do you know they can they be trusted.
There are closed source messaging apps and open source apps. Some are owned by large corporations, other fledgling startups; some are run by open source groups. App authors come from all over the globe. The larger corporations privacy records are easier to find. The open source apps easy to look at the code.
The reality is that most people can’t do the due diligence needed to validate the security and privacy that apps claim. At the end of the day you have to pick one you like using, is available for your friends, and make sure not to trust it too much.
